Two Different Non-Surgical Methods For Treating Your Varicose Veins

by Dylan Owens

Varicose veins are twisted veins that are enlarged and raised above the skin. They are often located in the legs. If you have varicose veins, you may want to get rid of them for multiple reasons. For one thing, these veins are generally going to be painful because your blood isn't flowing through them as smoothly and easily as it should. You may also want to get rid of the varicose veins because you don't like how noticeable they are, and you may feel somewhat self conscious about them.

While getting rid of them may be your goal, you may not want to have to go through surgery to do so. Thankfully, there are non-surgical ways to treat varicose veins successfully. This article is going to discuss 2 different non-surgical methods for treating your varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy

One method for treating your varicose veins is known as sclerotherapy. In this form of treatment, a solution called sclerosant is going to be injected into your varicose vein. This solution is also known as sodium tetradecyl sulfate. It is going to spread throughout your vein and cause it to collapse. This is then going to cause the blood that generally flows through this vein to reroute to other veins that are healthier and more capable of handling this blood flow.

The vein will continue to break down over time, and eventually your body is going to destroy the vein entirely. While the most common form of the sclerosant is going to be liquid, it can also be made into a foam. The foam form is excellent for large varicose veins because it is easier to spread over a larger area.

Endovenous Laser Ablation

Another successful method for removing your varicose veins, without having to go through surgery, is by endovenous laser ablation. In this method, the area where your vein is located, as well as the vein itself, are going to be numbed. Once the numbing agent has taken effect, a catheter is then going to be placed inside of the vein. At this point, the laser fiber is going to be put into the catheter. Because of the extreme heat of the laser, the vein is going to close in on itself. The catheter is then carefully removed and the procedure is complete. Over time, the vein is going to be completely reabsorbed by the body, thus successfully getting rid of the varicose vein.
